MASC President Mary Jo Rossetti (Somerville), President-Elect Ann Marie Cugno (Medford), Vice President Patrick Francomano (King Philip Reg.) and Secretary-Treasurer Jacob Oliveira (Ludlow) being sworn in on February 12 as members of the Local Government Advisory Commission.
Members, who in addition to MASC, include Massachusetts mayors, city/town managers and selectmen, meet monthly with either the Governor or Lt. Governor to discuss issues facing cities and towns and to strengthen the state-local partnership. Following the swearing-in ceremony, members discussed the Governor's recently released FY2014 budget proposal with Lt. Governor Tim Murray and Glen Schor, the newly appointed Secretary of Administration & Finance. President Rossetti commended the Governor for his efforts to add significantly to the education budget and also urged that districts be allowed flexibility on spending the additional dollars as school leaders struggle to meet regional transportation and special education expenses, reinstate lost staff, and address issues raised by the new educator evaluation requirements. Rossetti also gave strong voice to the urgent need for the proposed Chapter 70 Adequacy Study and concerns around changes to health insurance coverage for public employees and the potential impact of these on districts' ability to recruit late entry and/or second career professional into teaching.
