Michelle is currently serving her 20th year as a member of the Marlborough School Committee, and has been on the MASC Board of Directors as Division IV Chair since 2018.
On the Marlborough School Committee she has served as Vice Chair since 2012 and prior to that as Secretary (2005-2012). She has also served on numerous of its subcommittees, including: Policy; Negotiations; Wellness; Evaluation; ABAR; as well as numerous hiring and search committees.
Michelle has also been an active presence in the city’s community, as founder of the Marlborough Education Foundation; as President of the Jaworek Elementary School PTO and Chair of Cultural Programming; as volunteer social worker for over 15 years at the Metro West Free Medical Program; as a longtime member of the Marlborough Democratic City Committee; a participant of Habitat for Humanity; and a multi-year coordinator for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Having had the privilege of attending high school at The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, Michelle has been the Class Secretary for 45 years and serves on the Peddie Leadership Council.
Michelle received her B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University and her MSW from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a licensed clinical social worker, currently working for a visiting nurse company, following a career helping elders and their families navigate the aging process. Michelle has lived in Marlborough for over 30 years with her husband Lee Hettinger, an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County, and daughter Alexis and son Benjamin who both went through the Marlborough Public Schools.
